Understanding Leather Cords

Leather Cords which are available in different designs, size and shapes have now become one of the most commonly used raw material for designing leather jewelry and leather accessories. These cords are quite strong and the entire process of making such cords is also quite interesting.

Though, leather cords are available in various designs like round, flat and suede, the most commonly used is the round cords which are quite strong and durable. Round leather cord are strong enough because these cords are made from the center of the leather sheet.

The strength of a Leather Cord is quite important and should be properly checked as a weak cord could ruin the entire accessory which was made with so much effort and cost. Leather cords are used in making bracelets or necklaces and if the cord is weak then the entire accessory could break away in any instant.

Durability of the cord is also quite important as these cords should also sustain or bind the accessory for a fair amount of time. Strength and durability are the two most important aspects of a leather cord and for this very reason, these cords are made from the center of the leather hide.

With the rise in the demand of the leather jewelry, durability has become all the more important as leather accessories have become quite expensive and therefore every person who buys leather jewelry should be able to use it for a respectable period of time.

In order to attain maximum strength and durability, these cords are made from the middle of the leather sheet as this is the strongest part of the overall hide. The side or the belly part is quite smooth and is mostly used for making cords of width size 0.5 MM or 1 MM.

Though these cords are quite strong, they are quite smooth as well. Leather cords are worth only if they are smooth and therefore a rough leather cord has no value and should never be used in any manner.

Round cords also gives the flexibility of width size to the designers as they can made with width as low as 0.5 MM to width as high as 7 MM. High width cords are mostly used for making chokers or strong bracelets while low width are used as a basic material in an accessory.

The coloring process of the cord is also quite exciting. As leather is a natural product, it absorbs the color quite nicely. After the cords are extracted from the sheet according to their width size, these cords are next dyed using permitted colors. Most of the time these cords are dyed in the open sun, as it helps the leather to absorb the color in a very natural manner.
